Notice of Property Tax Increase
The Long County Board of Commissioners has tentatively adopted a 2025 millage rate which will require an increase in property tax by 20.72% percent.
All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings on the tax increase to be held at the Long County Board of Education Meeting Room, located at 75 W. Academy St., Ludowici, Ga 31316.
Public Hearing Dates:
January 5, 2026 at 6:00 PM
January 12, 2026 at 9:00 AM
January 12, 2026 at 6:00 PM (to be followed by the January Board of Commissioners Monthly Meeting to set the final millage rate)
This tentative increase will result in a millage rate of 18.707 mills, an increase of 3.211 mills. Without this tentative increase, the millage rate will be no more than 15.496 mills. The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $100,000.00 is approximately $128.43, and the proposed tax increase for non-homestead property with a fair market value of $200,000.00 is approximately $256.86.
Even though the millage rate is remaining the same as last year, the County’s action is still considered a tax increase because property values in Long County increased due to reassessment. When property values rise, the rollback millage rate is calculated to produce the same total tax revenue as the prior year (excluding new growth).
By not reducing the millage rate to the lower rollback rate and instead keeping the rate at 18.707 mills, the County will collect more total property tax revenue than it would have if the rollback rate were adopted. Under Georgia law, this difference is defined as a tax increase, even though the millage rate itself does not change.
